Israel Youth Hostel Association
The creation of the Yitzhak Rabin Hall at the HI-Jerusalem hostel was a response to the assassination of the Israeli prime minister. The assassination took place at a time of controversy and dissension within Israeli society following the signing of the Oslo Peace Agreement. The program aims to increase awareness of the importance of democratic values of tolerance, pluralism and peace, and examines the boundaries of acceptable expressions of dissent within a democratic society.
As part of the HI-Jerusalem hostel, participants confront the “question of borders and limits” in a democracy. The program exposes participants to an extremely wide range of opinions and statements in each subject, as expressed in public dialogue (books, articles and newspapers) and creative dialogue (posters, graffiti, films and caricatures). The educational program uses interactive, inter-disciplinary, and hands-on processes of an experiential nature, including audio-visual displays, presentations, and workshops.
