How We Are Organized

HI-USA is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland that seeks to advance the mission of hostelling through hostels and programs.

The HI-USA National Board of Directors sets the strategic direction for the organization. A Chief Executive Officer manages a staff of 180 that carries out the business of the association. National staff provides services direct to the membership and in support of field offices, councils and hostels. In addition, the National Office serves as liaison between HI-USA and the International Youth Hostel Federation.

Councils are separately incorporated local operating units chartered by the National Office to bring the hostelling mission to communities across the United States. There are presently 31 councils. About half are all volunteer units with no staff, with the others having from one to over 50 staff members. Hostels are essential in our efforts to fulfill our mission. These facilities are owned by HI-AYH councils, clubs or the National organization, or by private individuals or other nonprofit organizations. There are 75 hostels in the HI-USA network.

Working together, we all bring to life the hostelling mission in communities across the United States and around the world.
